 Jimmy Murphy was born in
1895 but tragedy soon struck the Murphy family and Jimmy was left an orphan. Forced to
work for a living at a young age he eventualy found employment in a garage frequented by
the local California racing fraternity. On his 21st birthday he joined the Duesenberg team
as a riding mechanic. In 1919 he became a full-time driver and entered in a board-speedway
race in Altoona, PA. His first race ended in a crash but his driving impressed the
Duesenberg brothers enough that they offered him another car with which he defeated the
entire field in Beverly Hills, California. In 1920 he finished a strong fourth in the
Indianapolis 500. Duesenberg had been building racing cars since 1907 and in 1920 built
their first passenger car. In 1921 they set out to do battle with the best that Europe had
to offer by entering three cars in the French Grand Prix. He
was now the number 1 driver for the team.
