The mechanics and inspectors from the
A.C.O, hover over Mike Hawthorne and Ivor Bueb's Jaguar D (No 6) - the car that will go on to win
the race., but which for the moment finds itself in quite a mess! Around 6:30 p.m., Mike Hawthorne
at the wheel of the Jaguar attempts to enter the right-hand deceleration lane in order to return to
the pits. In doing so, he impedes the progress of Lance Macklin's Austin Healey which is forced to
swirve to the left to avoid hitting the Jaguar, thus serving as a springboard for Pierre Levegh's
Mercedes SLR that propels itself into a crowd of spectators and disintegrates.
