 Many
of the earlier automotive artists started their careers depicting
other subject matter, often other forms of transportation such as
trains or planes. Turner from an early age drew airplanes before
turning his attention to cars primarily of the racing variety. Born in
Harrow, Middlesex, in 1934 he got his start at the age of 14. While
still in school his parents gave him a couple of drawing books by
Frank Wootton, including How to Draw Cars and by 1955 he was
contributing artwork to The Motor. After a stint producing artwork for
advertising with its exaggerated lines he turned to freelancing in
1957 before establishing his own firm, Studio 88, with his wife Helen
in 1963. Today he receives commissions from around the world including
many from well-known motor racing personalities.
He
is known for his accurate detail regarding the cars as well as the
track. Yet his paintings cannot be described as being in anyway
antiseptic. On the contrary there's a sense of honesty in his work
that emotes the respect that the artist has for his subject matter. In
order to capture the decisive moment Turner uses a camera rather than
a sketchpad feeling the latter to be too intrusive.
